TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION-PROMOTION DEPARTMENT
The activity of Training and Certification-Promotion Department of Constanta Maritime University is designed expressly to ensure performance of IMO Courses to students from all maritime specializations: full-time courses, part-time courses, along with tracking and guidance of students from full-time courses for practice onboard ships. The students in the 1st year of study attend 4 IMO courses required for issuing of Seaman’s Book and Apprentice Certificate:
- Medical First Aid
- Fire Prevention and Basic Fire Fighting
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities on Board Ships.
The students in the 2nd year of study attend another 4 IMO courses:
- Transport and Handling of Dangerous, Hazardous and Harmful Cargoes
- Prevention of Pollution of the Marine Environment MARPOL 73/78
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other Than Fast Rescue Boats)
- Maritime English. Problem of Communication in Human Relationships
The students from Navigation attend in the 3rd year of study another 2 IMO courses:
- Radar Navigation, Radar Plotting and Use of ARPA- Operational Level
- Restricted Operator's Certificate for GMDSS-GOC.
The first 8 courses are attended both by students from Faculty of Navigation, and Faculty of Electro-mechanics.
The courses described at nr.9 and nr.10 are designed for students of Faculty of Navigation.
After the final tests, at the end of courses, they will get Certificates for each course.
All students, who have IMO certificates and passed the medical examinations, will get the Seaman’s Book and the Apprentice Certificate of Competency (Endorsement), according to every specialization: deck, engineering, electrical engineer.
After obtaining the Seaman’s Book and the Apprentice Certificate of Competency (Endorsement), the students can develop their practice onboard ships. This practice (min 12 months for deck department, min 6 months for engine room department) is mandatory for the Certificate of Competency exam: marine deck officer, marine engineer officer, or marine electrical officer.
Students’ practice can be developed on board ships (coastal vessels excluded) during international voyages. In order to ensure the students’ practice on board ships, for the students to build up the minimum period required for their Certificate of Competency examination, CMU signed collaboration protocols with 22 crewing agencies.
The crewing agencies, which signed the protocols, develop cadets’ programs on board ships; now students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of study, from all marine specializations, scoring good school grades, are sailing in international voyages.
